Call for proposals: no-stage Press,
Critical Ballet Studies
no-stage press invites submissions for its inaugural publication, dedicated to critical ballet studies. We seek academic articles, critical essays, and interviews that interrogate the histories, aesthetics, and power structures embedded in ballet and ballet-adjacent forms.
From Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo to BALLEZ, we are interested in companies, artists and dancers that destabilize the canonical idea of classical ballet, the ones that put dance into conversation with our contemporary concerns. Thus, this issue is particularly interested in works that challenge the Western-centered legacies of classical dance, engaging with both historical and contemporary practices. We welcome contributions that examine classical ballet, contemporary ballet, and other forms of classical-inspired movement through critical, anti-racist, anti/decolonial and anti-patriarchal frameworks.
Possible topics include (but are not limited to):

-
Re-readings of canonical ballets and their ideological underpinnings
-
Race, coloniality, and representation in ballet institutions and training
-
Gender, embodiment, and discipline in classical dance traditions
-
Global adaptations, resistances, and reappropriations of ballet vocabularies
-
Labor, hierarchy, and authorship in ballet production
-
Interviews with artists, choreographers, and scholars engaging critically with ballet/dance
We encourage submissions from scholars, artists, and practitioners working across disciplines.
